A Note from Dr. Maher
As a veterinary surgeon, I consider it a profound privilege to care for the animals who bring so much joy, comfort, and meaning to our lives. Every procedure I perform is guided not only by advanced training and surgical precision, but by deep compassion and respect for the unique bond between pets and their people.
It’s an honor to play a role in the milestones that define that bond—from recovery after injury to restored mobility and renewed quality of life. These moments matter, and I am continually inspired by the strength and love shared between pets and their families.
My commitment is to bring the highest standard of surgical care directly to our community, supporting both local veterinarians and the animals they serve. I look forward to continuing this journey, helping to build a healthier future for all creatures in our care.

About Dr. Maher
Here are some common questions we receive from pet owners and vets.
A board-certified veterinary surgeon has completed extensive additional training beyond veterinary school, including an internship followed by a rigorous three-year residency program and comprehensive examinations administered by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). This certification signifies a high level of expertise in performing complex surgical procedures. While general practice veterinarians provide a broad range of medical care, board-certified surgeons focus exclusively on surgical interventions, ensuring advanced proficiency and up-to-date knowledge in surgical techniques and patient care.
I specialize in advanced orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries, but the procedures I most often perform are TPLO’s (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy), fracture repairs and complex joint or ligament surgeries.
Throughout my career, I’ve treated a wide range of animals – from companion pets to large animals and even exotics! I spent a significant portion of my career in large animal surgery, particularly equine patients, where procedures often involve complex biomechanics, challenging anatomical access and increased complexity overall due to the animal’s size and physiology. I’ve also performed successful surgeries on cows, pigs, deer, and even lions, giraffes, kangaroos and monkeys. This broad demanding experience has shaped my meticulous surgical technique and clinical adaptability. Today, my practice is exclusively dedicated to small animals – primarily dogs and cats. While small animal surgery still requires precision and expertise, the transition allows me to bring a high level of surgical training and complexity management to procedures that are more predictable in anatomy and postoperative care. Pet owners can feel confident that their companions are in the hands of a surgeon who has worked across the full spectrum of veterinary surgical challenges.
I always had a deep love for animals and a drive to solve complex problems. During my training, I was drawn to the complexity and precision of surgery – and the immediate impact it can have on a pet’s quality of life. Helping a pet walk again, heal from injury, or live pain-free is one of the most rewarding parts of my life.
Your primary care veterinarian is often the first to identify a surgical concern, whether it’s a torn ligament, fracture, or mass. I work closely with them to evaluate diagnostic imaging and clinical signs to determine whether surgery is the best path forward. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to review your pet’s records and offer guidance.
I work in collaboration with your primary veterinarian, who remains an essential partner throughout the process. They help manage the initial diagnosis and long-term care, while I provide the surgical expertise. Together, we ensure your pet receives seamless, specialized treatment with continued support.
I have been practicing veterinary medicine since 2009 and have been board certified in surgery since 2015.
I earned both my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Colorado State University. Following veterinary school, I completed a one-year internship at a busy practice in Central California followed by a surgical residency at Cornell University, where I received comprehensive training in advanced surgical techniques. In February 2015, I achieved board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, marking a significant milestone in my commitment to providing the highest standard of surgical care.
Yes! I’ve contributed to the veterinary field through authoring surgical case studies and textbooks on advanced surgical techniques and emergency surgery. I was also featured on Disney+’s television series, “Secrets of the Zoo: Tampa,” which highlights the dedicated work of veterinary professionals in a zoological setting.
We had a wonderful pit bull mix named Eden who passed away in 2021 after 12 wonderful years. Losing her was incredibly difficult for my family and me, and we haven’t yet brought another animal into our home. That said, we absolutely plan to! We know our next companion will come along when the time is right.
